Frequently Asked Questions

How early should I arrive before my booking?

For general admission tickets, please arrive ten minutes prior to your scheduled start time to ensure exhibit showings remain on schedule. If your group is participating in a guided tour of the exhibit, please meet in the Hoċokata Ti lobby 15 minutes prior to your scheduled tour start time.

How long should I plan to be at the exhibit?

Individuals that purchase a general admission ticket can explore the exhibit at their own pace, though most spend less than an hour in the exhibit.  For groups that are participating a guided exhibit tour, please expect to be in the exhibit for an hour.

Can I purchase exhibit tickets at the door?

Yes, however, there are a limited number of walk-in tickets available. To ensure you receive a ticket in your preferred timeframe, please purchase tickets online beforehand.

Am I allowed to take photos inside Hoċokata Ti?

Photos or videos of any sort are not allowed in Hoċokata Ti or the Mdewakanton: Dwellers of the Spirit Lake exhibit. Guests that do not comply with this guideline may be asked to leave.

Can I explore Hoċokata Ti beyond the Mdewakanton: Dwellers of the Spirit Lake exhibit?

At this time, the general public is allowed in the Mdewakanton: Dwellers of the Spirit Lake exhibit, gift shop, library, and main lobby. The outdoor trails and gardens include plants that are culturally significant to Dakota people and are to be used by SMSC Members only. The trails, gardens, and lower level of the building are not open to the public.

If I visit the Hoċokata Ti gift shop, do I have to pay an exhibit admission fee?

Guests are welcome to visit the gift shop without purchasing a ticket to the Mdewakanton: Dwellers of the Spirit Lake exhibit.

Is the facility handicap accessible?

Yes, the parking lot, building, and exhibit are all wheelchair accessible.
